Don't Blink

I opened the door and followed my grandmother, great aunt, and parents out the back door. Down the wet back porch steps. I counted, -one, two, three, four, five- and followed them to the car. I hugged my grandmother and aunt one more time, and then said goodbye. When they pulled away their car revealed the garden that is lined with rows of sunflowers that are rapidly losing their petals. I had thought that the sunflower-picture-season was over. But when the car was gone, the beautiful rows of sunflowers were revealed. They were falling apart, they were a mess, but I still found the little bits of beauty in them and loved them for it.

Isn't that like God with us? Instead of looking for the messes, he looks for the beauty in us. Instead of worrying about the stem that's drooping, he loves the way the rain drops roll off the petals.

"Teach me to number my days;
And count every moment before it slips away.
Taking all the colors before they fade to gray;
 I don't want to miss even just a second more of this."
